What we now celebrate as Mothers Day, a time for buying gifts for mum and treating her for the day, has its origins in ancient times.  In Ancient Greece and Rome the Goddesses of Isis and Gaia were worshipped as the Mother of the Gods and then early Christians celebrated their Mother Church.  In the seventeenth century this day was broadened to embrace real mothers and the name Mothering Sunday came about.

Mothers Day always falls during Lent and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this was a day when families were permitted to break the fasting of Lent, and workers were allowed to spend the day with their families.

Today, Mothers Day is all about showing your mum just how much she means to you, buying her a Mothers Day gift and a card, and spoiling her for the day, I hope my husband and children are reading and paying attention – gifts for mum is important!.
